Whales perform at Sunshine

We'd just left the beach on Sunday when we got a text from friends saying there were Humpback whales breaching and putting on a show just off Sunshine Beach. I was tempted to go back and have a look but we'd just loaded two wet, sandy and tired kids into the car, so we missed out this time.

It's not all that uncommon to see whales off the eastern beaches at this time of year, though. You know they're out there when cars on the coastal road, David Low Way, suddenly slow down to about 20kmh and people starting pulling off the road in random places. I couldn't work out what was happening the first time, but I now I know it means the whales are here.

Summer is coming, my friends

11092010084-r It might only be September, but it was more like summer on the weekend. We took some friends from Melbourne to Main Beach for a swim and some boogie boarding and the weather was fantastic.

The water's about 23 degrees at this time of year (positively warm for Melburnians!) and the days have been reaching about 27. I'm sure it won't last now that I've said that, but I'm enjoying it while it does.

Noosa Biosphere Day

Nature_1.6 - Copy If you're going to be in Noosa later this month, Sunday the 19th is Noosa Biosphere Day, a free day of music, cultural performances, food, film and information about local plants and sustainability. There will be things for kids as well as adults, and it's going to be held in the Noosa Woods (at the end of Hastings Street), so you can just sit and chill out by the water, too.

It starts at 10am and will go through until about 4pm. For more information, go to the Noosa Biosphere website.

Rayner's new eatery in business

Be one of the first to try out David Rayner's new eatery, the Thomas Corner Eatery on the corner of Thomas Street and Gympie Terrace in Noosaville. It has just opened and ought to draw instant crowds, based on Rayner's reputation for producing first class food.

David Rayner founded one of one of Noosa's favourite dining spots, the River House Restaurant on Weyba Road, Noosaville, and since selling it has spent a year travelling and researching concepts for his latest project.

Thomas Corner Eatery features recycled timbers from a ship's wharf and comfortable banquettes, so you can settle in and chill out, and food is served all day. "You can sit up at the bar inside or on the terrace and look at the river and all the happenings out there," Rayner says. "We want our patrons to be relaxed... people can bring their laptops, or read the national papers and magazines, it's up to them."
